"If I Were Mayor" Essay Contest
The West Virginia Municipal League proudly presents our annual "If I Were Mayor, I Would..." essay contest. An opportunity designed to enrich 7th-grade students' understanding of municipal government and its importance.
Understanding Government Through Creativity
We believe in the power of creative thinking and how it can shape the future of our communities. The essay contest is a medium to learn more about municipal government while exercising creative writing skills. We urge all 7th-grade students across West Virginia to put their thoughts into words and share their vision for their community.
Prizes and Recognition
We will select two winners from across the state and present with them with a plaque and a $500.00 donation for their school. This is not just about winninga prize, but about contributing to your community and becoming part of a broader conversation about our towns and cities.
Entry Requirements and Deadlines
To enter, please complete an entry form (you may use a copy) and attach it to your one-page handwritten essay. Don't forget to write your name, your teacher's name, and your school's name at the top of the essay. Entries are accepted from November 1 to December 31 of each year.
Evaluation Criteria
To ensure fairness and transparency, we will be using the following criteria to evaluate the essays:
- Legibility: Your essay must be easy to read and comprehend.
- Relevance to Topic: Your essay must adhere to the contest topic, "If I Were Mayor, I Would...".
- Grammar/Spelling: Proper use of grammar and spelling is essential.
- Understanding of the Mayor's Role: Demonstrate your knowledge of what a Mayor does and the impact they can have on a city.
Winners will be notified via mail, giving them the exciting news of their achievement. We look forward to receiving your entries and reading your innovative ideas about being a Mayor.
